ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500 Usage, Ultrafast, and a Cost Worksheet

OpenAI official help checked October 6, 2026

$100, $200, $500. ChatGPT Pro now comes in three sizes. On September 29, 2026, OpenAI added Pro 500 and reopened Pro 200 to new subscribers after a pause. The price tags are clear. What you actually get for the extra money is not: OpenAI no longer puts a number on it, and the old “5x” and “20x” multipliers are gone from its help page. So how do you choose? This guide compares the published prices, the relative order of included usage, and Ultrafast access, then shows how to decide with a one-week log of your own work.

The short answer
  • Pro 100: $100 per month. The cheapest of the three, with no Ultrafast.
  • Pro 200: $200 per month. More included usage than Pro 100, and open to new subscribers again, though new subscribers get less than the old Pro 200 allowance. No Ultrafast.
  • Pro 500: $500 per month. The highest included usage of the three, and the only Pro plan with Ultrafast.
  • The official help page no longer gives exact message counts or fixed 5x/20x multipliers. Your account’s pricing page and Usage screen are the final word.

The three Pro plans at a glance

Prices and cost calculations below are in US dollars (USD). “Included usage” means usage covered by the subscription fee, before separately purchased credits. Official help rechecked October 6, 2026.

Pro 100

$100 /month
  • Pro models and core Pro features
  • Lowest subscription price of the three
  • No Ultrafast

Pro 200

$200 /month
  • More included usage than Pro 100
  • Open to new subscribers again (with a lower allowance)
  • No Ultrafast

Pro 500

$500 /month
  • Highest included usage of the three
  • Includes GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast
  • Ultrafast draws on included usage first, then credits

“More included usage” is OpenAI’s own wording; it gives the order, not the amounts. This guide does not estimate unpublished message or token counts.

Pro 200 is back, with a smaller allowance

OpenAI reopened Pro 200 to new subscribers on September 29, and its help page still said so when checked on October 6. The price is still $200 a month, but new subscribers who are not grandfathered get a lower allowance than the earlier Pro 200 plan. OpenAI says the change reflects its increasingly efficient models. Same name, same price, less in the box. For the rest of that day’s announcements, see our OpenAI DevDay 2026 roundup.

Temporary grandfathering window
If an account had an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from September 22 through 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026, it keeps the previous allowance through October 29 as long as the subscription stays active. After that it moves to the lower allowance, at the same price. If your subscription ended in the meantime and you resubscribe on the same account, you still qualify as long as you meet that window. OpenAI emails affected users with details.

Separate Ultrafast from credits

  • Ultrafast is included only with Pro 500 among the Pro plans.
  • Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast. OpenAI says this applies “at launch,” which leaves room for it to change later.
  • On the same model, Fast mode burns through included usage 2.5 times as fast as Standard, and GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast 8 times as fast. Those are consumption rates, not promises about speed. When you pay with credits the rates differ: 2x for Fast and 6x for Ultrafast.
  • Credits can pay for Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, depending on your plan and account. Included usage goes first, then the credit balance. Credits do not add usage to every model or feature.

A hypothetical cost worksheet

If you cannot compare allowances in numbers, flip the question: how much of your time would an upgrade need to save each month to pay for itself? The table below is plain arithmetic. It says nothing about model performance or actual allowances.

ComparisonExtra monthly costBreak-even at $40/hourArithmetic
Pro 100 → Pro 200$1002.5 hours/month$100 ÷ $40 = 2.5
Pro 200 → Pro 500$3007.5 hours/month$300 ÷ $40 = 7.5
Pro 100 → Pro 500$40010 hours/month$400 ÷ $40 = 10
Example only

Say a higher plan means your work stalls 20 fewer minutes a day, five days a week. With an average month of 4.33 weeks, that is about 7.2 hours. At the table’s $40 an hour, 7.2 × $40 is about $288. That comfortably covers the $100 step from Pro 100 to Pro 200, but falls just short of the $300 step from Pro 200 to Pro 500. This is an illustration, not a promised saving; use the log below to measure your own.

Keep a one-week usage log before paying

Not every minute at a limit is lost. If you did something useful while you waited, that time cost you little. Log waiting time spent on other tasks separately from time when work truly stopped, and count only the stopped time.

  • Date and task
  • Model or feature used
  • Start and completion time
  • Exact limit or error message
  • Displayed recovery or reset time
  • Waiting time and workaround
  • Credits purchased and cost
  • Human review or rework time

Day 5
Day 6
Day 7

If limits never stopped your work during the week, your current plan is probably enough. If work stalled again and again and that lost time was worth more than the upgrade price, you have a concrete reason to move up. Pick the bigger plan from your log, not your gut.

FAQ

Can a new customer subscribe to Pro 200 now?

Yes. OpenAI reopened Pro 200 to new subscribers on September 29, 2026, and its help page still said so on October 6. New subscribers who are not grandfathered get a lower included allowance than the earlier Pro 200 plan.

Can Pro 100 or Pro 200 use Ultrafast?

Ultrafast is currently included only with Pro 500. At launch, buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it.

Is annual billing available?

No. Pro is billed monthly, with no annual billing or multi-month prepayment.

Exactly how many messages do I get?

The official help page does not promise a fixed number. Tasks that look alike can use very different amounts depending on the model, how much context is processed, reasoning, tools, retrieval, caching and speed mode. For what it is worth, OpenAI’s Codex pricing page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Weekly limits still apply, so keep an eye on the Usage screen on your account.

Correction history

  • October 6, 2026: Rechecked OpenAI Help and the Codex pricing page; prices and plan terms are unchanged since October 3. Added the Codex note that Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, and the Fast and Ultrafast rates when paying with credits (2x and 6x).
  • October 3, 2026: Added the reopened Pro 200 subscription and the new Pro 500 tier. Removed unsupported current 5x/20x claims and language saying Pro 200 was still closed. Replaced outdated reset-purchase advice with the current credits guidance, and added the hypothetical worksheet and one-week log.
  • September 25, 2026: Reflected the sign-up pause and usage information available at that time. Those details now remain only as dated history.
